We had so many wonderful and special experiences in Oaxaca. What really put everything over the top though was the incredible group that we brought with us to Oaxaca! It was a group with passion, knowledge, curiosity and energy. It was an absolute pleasure to travel and experience #randtoaxaca2020 with everyone who joined us! A huge gracias to @atateka @davidsprintis @joeyb_eats @kittysconzo @lempka_gram @ljsconzo @rona.edelman @sonia.castellani & @tompersons for making this such a fun trip!

On the last night of #randtoaxaca2020 we put our chef ( @lempka_gram ) and others to “work” making salsas (as we had earlier put the bartenders on our trip to “work” leading the teams in our cocktail workshop/competition. We had a suitably wonderful traditional Mixtecan dinner from @olgacabreraoropeza and her team @tierradelsolrestaurante to bring this tour to a close.

We love including top shelf cocktail workshops in our tours. Thanks to @akawinegeek @delmagueymezcal @puroburrosf and @ofrendaoaxaca the one we had for #randtoaxaca2020 was sensational. It mixed free-flowing top flight #singlevillagemezcals with incredible cocktails made by Steve Olson & Eric Giardina. To top the workshop off, we had divided into three groups of four people for a friendly cocktail competition in which each group devised and made original shaken, and stirred cocktails using Del Maguey Single Village Mezcales and produce we had bought at the market in Ocotlan. It was so much fun doing it that I don’t have any photos of the actual competition!
🇲🇽
We owe a huge, huge thank you to @akawinegeek and the entire team @delmagueymezcal for their incredible #hospitality and going so far above and beyond to introduce our group to so many of the wonders of #mezcal and of Oaxaca, insights we could not have had in any other way. Stigibeu!

We ate very, very well in Oaxaca, but the overwhelming standout was Alfonsina by @cocinan . The experience excelled in every way. His cooking would be wonderful anywhere, but at the home he shares with his family, it is sheer magic. #randtoaxaca2020 For photos of the food from this wonderful meal, see @docsconz 🇲🇽

Dear Rascal + Thorn Family,
Happy New Year!!

Wow, what a year we just finished. Good riddance, 2020! Phew. Let’s hope that 2021 provides us all good health, safety and that the world can heal and open up for gastronomic adventures again.

We are both itching to revisit our favorite spots and also create new itineraries. But to be able to plan for this, we need there to be more affirmation that the vaccine works and that the virus is diminishing. After having to cancel so many trips last year due to the pandemic, we hope to never have to face this gut-wrenching task again.

To put this behind us, our plan and hope is to return to Mexico and Japan this coming Fall, the last places we visited before the pandemic erupted almost a year ago. All of this will be announced when we feel like it is wise to "pencil" it in. We are also beginning to work on some custom, small group trips for 2022, so if that is something of interest to you, we can get started thinking about and planning it now.

A new idea that we are working on now is hosting virtual events such as spirits tastings, coffee, chocolate and other online experiences. Stay tuned for an announcement in the next week.

And lastly, we do hope to get back to doing our Guest Chef Dinners, perhaps, if things begin to improve, starting as early as this Summer.

We look forward to reconnecting with you all very soon!!
Cheers,
John + Charles … See MoreSee Less

We hope that it won’t be too long until we can start planning and taking our tours again. In the meantime, here is some important information about travel insurance.
