The Water of Life Film

The Water of Life is an acclaimed documentary that tells the story of the visionaries who transformed the struggling whisky industry of the 1980s into the global phenomenon it is today. We are thrilled to welcome Greg Swartz, director of The Water of Life, for his fifth collaboration with Rascal + Thorn as we embark on an unforgettable journey from Spain to Scotland, culminating at the Independent Spirits Festival.

Joining us as a co-leader is the renowned David Brodie of Bunnahabhain, who will guide us through the fascinating world of Sherry in its homeland of Spain. With deep expertise in the influence of Sherry casks on the character and complexity of Scotch whisky, David brings a wealth of knowledge and insight that will make this experience truly exceptional.

Bodega, Cooperage and Festival Activities!

This is a truly unique journey that spans two countries and explores the deep connection between Sherry and Scotch whisky.

Our adventure begins in Madrid, Spain, where we spend our first night before traveling south to Jerez for a four-night immersive experience. While in Jerez, we will visit some of the region’s most respected Sherry producers and cooperages, gaining exclusive insight into the traditions, craftsmanship, and techniques that shape the world’s finest Sherries. This portion of the tour offers a comprehensive deep dive into the diverse styles and expressions of Sherry and their profound influence on whisky maturation.

After five unforgettable nights in Spain, we fly to Edinburgh, Scotland, for the final three nights of the tour. Our last two full days will be spent enjoying a variety of exclusive tastings, events, and experiences connected to the Independent Spirits Festival, now in its third year. Set against the backdrop of one of the world’s great whisky cities, the festival provides the perfect finale to a journey celebrating the people, places, and traditions that define the world of fine spirits.

Spanish Dining

Spain is renowned for its rich culinary traditions, and exceptional food will be a central part of this journey. From the vibrant dining scene of Madrid to the historic taverns and celebrated restaurants of Jerez, guests will enjoy some of the finest regional cuisine Spain has to offer. Nearly all meals are included, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the local culture through carefully curated dining experiences that showcase the flavors, ingredients, and traditions of each region.

After a day spent exploring Sherry bodegas and cooperages, we’ll gather at a selection of outstanding restaurants chosen not only for their quality but also for their ability to reflect the unique character of Andalusia. Whether it’s fresh seafood, traditional tapas, Iberian ham, or local specialties paired with world-class Sherry, every meal is designed to complement the experiences of the day.

And no visit to southern Spain would be complete without experiencing its vibrant cultural heritage. For those looking to immerse themselves in the spirit of Andalusia, we’ve arranged an unforgettable Flamenco experience, offering a glimpse into one of Spain’s most passionate and iconic artistic traditions.

As the tour transitions to Scotland, the culinary experiences continue. In Edinburgh, we’ll celebrate the final days of the journey with memorable dinners, exclusive tastings, and special events connected to the Independent Spirits Festival. These experiences provide the perfect opportunity to reflect on the discoveries of the past week while enjoying outstanding food, exceptional spirits, and the company of fellow enthusiasts. Together, they create a fitting conclusion to an extraordinary eight-night exploration of Spain, Scotland, Sherry, and whisky.
